Te Reo
At Maraetai Beach School we are dedicated to the teaching and learning of te reo Māori. Students receive weekly lessons within their classrooms, where they follow a specific set of reo goals for each area of the school. Our progressions scaffold students and allow for a broad coverage of exposure to various aspects of te reo over their time with us at school.
We celebrate Matariki and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) every year, and our students have developed great knowledge of these particular important events in the Māori calendar.
Alongside our te reo lessons, we offer the experience of joining our school kapa haka groups. Our senior group, led by Mrs Laker, perform during our school pōwhiri as well as performing at cultural festivals around our local area. Our junior students also have the opportunity to belong to a kapa haka group led by Mrs Travers, where they learn waiata and experience using ti rakau and poi.
We are proud of our te reo learning journey here at MBS, and we continue to work alongside local iwi and with our whānau to keep moving forward.
He waka eke noa - we are all in the together.
