The MBS Board of Trustees is elected every 3 years.
They take on the governance of the school to create a successful school.

Mark Keenan / Principal

I have been principal at MBS since the beginning of 2015. Prior to this I was a teacher and leader at a number of Auckland schools as well as overseas. I am married to Kate and 2 wonderful daughters Anna and Ruby.

At MBS I want every child to achieve to their potential and be engaged, confident and resilient learners. A key to this is a strong professional development programme for our teachers and developing a meaningful future focused school curriculum. I believe children learn best when there is a strong home/school partnership.

Paul Bennett

Dip.Tchng, Chairman

I have a daughter in the junior school at Maraetai Beach School and I have lived in Maraetai for over 12 years.  Throughout this time I have been involved in the community as a soccer coach, crew member of coastguard and past chairperson of Maraetai Sea Rescue.

I am currently Chairperson of the Maraetai Beach School Board of Trustees and I am also part of the health and safety and funding pathways teams.  As a member of the Board I am proud of the work that we have done over the last three years, I believe we have worked positively with the fantastic staff at the school to create an organisation that provides an excellent education for our children.

I am passionate about education and as Deputy Principal of an East Auckland secondary school I have a good understanding of what our children need to achieve in their primary and intermediate years in order to be ready for NCEA and further education.  I am currently completing the final year of a Phd in education that is exploring how we can best support teachers in New Zealand through professional development and teacher coaching.

Maraetai Beach is a fantastic school and I look forward to continuing our work with the teachers and leaders in order to achieve our strategic goals in the coming years.

Wayne Gillard

I have am privileged to be the Deputy Principal and the Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees at Maraetai Beach School.  I have lived in the community for many years and had a long association with the school. I am passionate about putting students first and providing opportunities for them to be the best they can be. I enjoy coming to school every day and working alongside a talented staff and teaching in classrooms to our vibrant students.

Our school vision is based around three words – People, Potential and Planet. This is always kept at the forefront of decisions and has enabled this school to become the excellent school it is.

We have an amazing environment on our doorstep which we look to use to enhance learning for our students. We have a supportive community who also love to get involved in the wide range of learning experiences offered.

Outside school I always enjoy quality time with my family (I am married with two kids). I am also passionate about sports and run marathons when I can. I am involved in the community with coaching and like to take the opportunity to spend time at our local beaches and parks.

Maraetai Beach School is a great place to be!

María Lamberto Calvo

Parent Trustee

My first contact with Maraetai Beach School was in 2004 when my family moved to this area. I currently have a daughter in Year 3 and my 2 youngest will be joining the school community in the not too distant future. I did my University studies in Spain graduating with a degree in Philosophy and Education and a teaching diploma. I moved to New Zealand in 1997 and started my teaching career in Papakura. I have been actively involved in Education since then and I am passionate about getting the very best out of students. I have been involved in assessment and curriculum development for the last 8 years. I am currently working for NZQA in a variety of roles. I also work as Head of Spanish at Kings College. I aim use my expertise in Education to help the school continue to lift its profile and to help students get ready to face the challenges they will encounter at secondary school and beyond. I believe the whole community must be part of the education of our youth and parents/whanau and caregivers should be an integral part of this process.

Damian Powley

Living in Maraetai for 12 years, raising three children who are all growing up and attending Maraetai  Beach School, I often have to pinch myself for how lucky we are. I think our children have an amazing array of opportunities right on their doorstep, being active members engaged in their community. Maraetai Beach School is a cornerstone in shaping these pathways for stronger, resilient communities.

My background is in project management and strategic delivery. Supporting and ensuring the Board of Trustees continues its great work to maintaining an open and accountable foundation for Maraetai Beach School is foremost in my role as a representative.
